International Tourism Institute at National Tourist Association was founded for the need of professional research work in the field of tourism. ITI develops research methods, implements programmes of tourism statistics, analyses economic and social problems and brings scientific, professional approach of treating problems in tourism into force. The Institute develops education and training programmes in tourism, collects professional literature and statistic data and strengthens international scientific and professional cooperation in tourism. Research and analyse results are published in Tourist News, a specialized bulletin of Slovene tourism and in the periodical miscellany Academia Turistica.

A resolution on founding the International Tourism Institute at National Tourist Association was adopted in 1994 by the Association's Assembly; the constitutive meeting of the Institute's Assembly followed on May 28th, 1998. The founders were the leading companies from Slovene tourism. The Institute began to implement first researches, analyses and training programs in 1998.

International Tourism Institute is registered as an economic institute and enlisted in the records of scientific research organizations at the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport under the number 1635.

The main fields of work:

  • basic and methodological research
  • international development projects and strategies in the field of tourism, tourism and cultural development, education, the use of alternative sources of energy, and the use of information technology in tourism
  • Slovene national projects and development strategies for tourist destinations, the development of tourism programmes, promoting high-quality excellence in tourism and introduction branding in tourism 
  • marketing strategies and analyses and entrepreneurial counselling
  • education and training

The Institute has the following boards:

  • Council of the Institute as a managing organ, president is Mr. Boris NEMEC, HIT d.d. 
  • Scientific Council of the Institute, president is Mr. Janez SIRŠE, M.Sc., proffessor at the Faculty of Economics in Ljubljana 
  • Supervisory Council of the Institute, president is Mrs. Alenka Iskra, managing director of the joint stock company Terme Maribor
  • Director of the Institute is Mr. Zorko Žerjal
