CERKNICA

Cerknica is situated near the one of the most unusual natural phenomena: intermittent Lake Cerknica below the Slivnica hill (1114m). Lake Cerknica is an intermittent lake and covers 26 km2when is full - even up to 38 km2!. It is 10 km long and 5 km wide. That makes it the largest lake in Slovenia.

Cerknica is close to the Regional Park Rakov Škocjan and Snežnik castle. The creation of  this karsts valley – Rakov Škocjan is a result of the junction of  two types of valleys: 'gable end' valley where is the source of the river and the 'blind' valley where the river flow undergrounf. In the upper part of the valley remain of the tunnel is the Little natual bridge and about 2,5 km down the Rak river stream is the Great natural Bridge. The Rak river flows from the Zelske cave (as matter of fact from the sliplands).

Area of Rakov Škocjan is protected as a regional park since 1949. Naturalistic and educational foothpath leads trough the park. Valley got its name by the church of St. Kancijan which is abandoned and in ruins now.

Even now the town it is famous by the spring Carnival and the lake as a wind-surfers paradise. Cerknica lies 16 km from the famous (and the largest Slovenian...) Postojna cave (Postojna) but Krizna cave with the small is the opportunity for a great guided adventure. Interesting natural feature is also Planinsko polje (karsts field).
