International projects
International Tourism Institute and National Tourist Association are intensively developing international cooperation programs and building international network. Both institutions are currently involved in several European projects dealing with tourism product development, education, use of modern information and communication technology, design of international standards etc. Most of them are partly financed by the EU. A lot of projects have already been successfully completed.
Within our EU-projects we cooperated with more than 60 partners from 18 European countries. Projects are carried out under the Interreg III A, B and C, Culture 2000, Leonardo da Vinci, Intelligent Energy and other programs. Their total value exceeds more than 10 million euros. Most of them take 2 to 3 years.

The initiative for the project came within the activities that were implemented by project partners in recent years and where we found that tourism worker's education and raised awareness on specific needs and required attitude towards ''different'' regardless of the form of their disability or difference, are necessary for enhancing accessibility of tourist services.
The main objective of the ITTI project is to improve current achievements in providing better accessibility of tourism services in Slovenia. The partners will transfer and adapt the modules and methodology for training of tourism employees on working with disabled and elderly guests from abroad. We will carry out several activities in order to reach the main objective – transfer and adaptation of modules: analysis of the current state and needs regarding the accessibility in tourism, training of the trainers who will further train tourism employees, carrying out study visits abroad and promotion of training modules among all stakeholders, involved in the project.
Main objectives:
- analyse training needs on accessibility in Slovenian tourism sector
- transfer and adapt training modules on accessible tourism, which were developed within projects EUFORME in HAPPY TOURIST
- prepare a manual and e-tool on accessibility in tourism; upgrade the training modules with regard to Happy Tourist self-learning e-tool and knowledge from other, similar projects such as: ISTO, Netmen, Equal Tourist and CETA
- train the trainers
- carry out pilot trainings in five different tourist facilities

Mainly dominated by SMEs, the tourism sector is very important to the European economy and barrier-free traveling is an important topic of the European tourism policy. In the EU, about 37 million people are disabled and represent a large and growing market. Enhancing accessibility is also about the ageing population. Altogether, around 120 million disabled and senior citizens in Europe would welcome improved access.
The MIT! project is targeting at managers of SMEs in the tourist sector and those who are responsible for marketing, trainers, teachers, key actors for lifelong learning, multipliers and actors, VET providers targeting the tourist sector, associations of senior citizens, of people with handicaps and their family members and key actors for regional economic development. MIT! project aims topromote barrier-free travelling for senior citizens and people with handicaps through innovative marketing strategies based on awareness of specific requirements, needs and active interest in social inclusion. MIT! will contribute to improve access for senior citizens and people with handicaps as well as for their family members, to tourism and lifelong learning, and improve their mobility and quality of life.
National Tourist Association was responsible for the implementation of pilot training courses for representatives of SMEs, trainers and teachers and other stakeholders in tourism.
Main objective:
- 1. contributing to improve access for senior citizens and people with handicaps as well as for their family members, to tourism and lifelong learning, and improve their mobility and quality of life.
Main activities:
- development of a standard model for design and benchmarking barrier-free tourism for senior citizens and people with handicaps
- development of an ICT tool for presentation and marketing on the internet
- implementation of a blended learning course
- development of a platform matching supply and demand on European level

The structure of partnership: ministry, regional provinces, tourism associations and organizations, two research institutions and university with the department of medieval history
Associated organizations: 39CrossCulTour project aims to increase the value of cultural heritage in Central Europe and, with cross-marketing, capitalize on cultural resources for more attractive cities and regions. Project is based on the results of previous project TRANSROMANICA, during which the European Cultural Route Transromanica, which operates under the auspices of the Council of Europe and the European Institute of Cultural Routes, was developed.
International Tourism Institute contributed to the project with concrete results and stimulated the development with regard to demand and needs of cultural tourism in Slovenia. We upgraded and expanded the existing trails and networks in Slovenia. Besides that, we contributed to greater international competitiveness of Slovenian tourism with the development and creation of transnational marketing strategies and cross-marketing strategies for culture and tourism, innovations in the field of management and presentation of cultural attractions, trails and regions, raising the awareness of a common European heritage etc.
Main objectives:
- Raising the added value of cultural heritage in Central Europe and, by means of appropriate cross-marketing approach, enable capitalization of cultural resources for more attractive and competitive cities and regions
- Promotion and active regional and international cooperation for the development of cultural tourism, with which we want to achieve as minimal demographic and social differences as possible and increase the prosperity of inhabitants in partner regions.
Main activities:
- Promotion of Central Europe as destination with rich culture – promotion of its common cultural heritage at the global market
- Preservation, promotion and inclusion of cultural resources into integrated tourism products, establishment of collaboration with small and medium sized enterprises to facilitate penetration into international markets, which will bring greater employability and higher income (events, audio-video system, signage, catalogue etc.)
- Exchange of CrossCulTour knowledge – sharing, learning, volunteering and cultural heritage management for the purpose of sustainable capitalization of cultural heritage (summer schools, online site, youth training, CrossCulTour guides etc.)
- Effective dissemination of project activities and results outside the project partnership by using innovative communication technologies for reaching the target group

Tourism Serbia - Support to implementation of the National Strategy for Tourism

In 2010, Serbian government started with the project 'Support to implementation of the National Strategy for Tourism', funded by the European Union. The overall objective of the project is to increase the contribution of Serbia’s tourism sector to the National Economy.Mag. Janez Sirše, head of consulting at the International Tourism Institute, is involved in the project as a key expert and the Team Leader.
Main objectives:
- Develop the capacity of the National Corporation for Tourism Development (NCTD) to fully support the implementation of the Tourism Strategy of the Republic of Serbia
- Identify, facilitate and develop action plans that will enable Public Private Partnership (PPP) investment, promote them and raise quality standards in the sector’s real estate, human resources, tourism infrastructure and under-developed assets.
- Support other Government institutions responsible for the implementation of the Tourism Strategy of the Republic of Serbia and provide proposals for update of the Strategy related policies in line with best EU practice.
- Support the market positioning and branding of Serbia on the international tourism map.

Description
The SETCOM-project intends to build up and promote 10 communities from 10 European countries as pioneers for sustainable energy use in tourism business.These communities will create a clear and concrete plan showing how to increase energy efficiency, how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and how to foster the use of renewable energysources in the tourism business as one of their main economic sector. The communities are committed tothe implementation of the Energy Action Plan.The structure of partners and the geographical distribution of partners ensure an effective dissemination of project results throughout Europe.
Main objectives- Raising awareness of substantial energy topics among tourism companies, local administration and tourists within the participating communities
- Raising awareness for the topic ‘sustainable energy tourism’ Europe wide
- Setting up energy action plans for the participating communities, saying how to reach the effective energy use, reduce emissions and reduce energy consumption in tourism
Main activities
- Setting up the programmes to foster the use of renewable energy sources in tourism among tourism companies, local communities and tourists
- Work out a concrete action plan for the use of renewable sources with measures that will lead to more sustainable traffic in tourist destinations
- Sensitizing tourists about the energy saving and efficient energy use on holidays and at home (creation of incentive programmes, such as promotions etc.)
- Implementing seminars, offering individual consultations and support for tourism companies when organizing thematic promotional actions
